Green IT umfasst alle Bestrebungen, die Informationstechnologie umweltfreundlicher, nachhaltiger und energieeffizienter zu machen. Durch die Beschleunigung der Digitalisierung und die Zunahme digitaler (End-)Geräte und IT-Infrastrukturen in Unternehmen ergeben sich  enorme Einsparungspotenziale. Einerseits hinsichtlich der CO2-Emissionen, andererseits mit Blick auf Verbrauchs- und Umweltrisiken. Green IT umfasst dabei viele Aspekte: Energie-/Stromverbrauch, Recycling, nachhaltige Produkte & Softwarelösungen, IT-Infrastruktur, Haltbarkeiten und Lieferketten. 

Im Rahmen der Nachhaltigkeitsbestrebungen von Unternehmen liegt zukünftig eine besondere Verantwortung im Bereich der IT. Laut einer Bitkom-Studie werden die Kapazitäten der Rechenzentren bis 2025 um mehr als 20% ansteigen. Green IT wird zu einem zentralen Bestandteil für ein nachhaltiges, ressourcen- und kostenschonendes Unternehmensmanagement. Hierzu müssen Unternehmen und Verantwortliche jetzt die richtigen Strategien entwickeln.
